UNI-MLC held a strategic engagement session at the UNI Global Union Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, chaired by Sister Alke Boessiger, Deputy General Secretary of UNI Global Union, and coordinated by Sister Giedre Lelyte, Head of Gaming.

The discussion focused on key global labour issues, including developments at the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC), progress towards a proposed ILO Convention on Platform Workers, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, collective bargaining, organising strategies, supply chain accountability and the future of work.

Sectoral updates were presented by UNI Global Union representatives from the Commerce, Finance, Care, Postal & Logistics and Gaming sectors, highlighting emerging challenges and opportunities facing workers globally.

UNI Global Union also recognised Malaysia’s recent organising successes, particularly involving AEON and IKEA, and commended the active role played by UNI-MLC in strengthening worker representation and regional cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

During the session, Brother Datuk Mohamed Shafie Pakiri Mammal, President of UNI-MLC, highlighted the continued growth of UNI-MLC, which now represents close to 500,000 workers, and shared concerns regarding AI, corporate restructuring, outsourcing, franchising, workplace violence, mental health and the need to safeguard collective bargaining rights.

Both UNI Global Union and UNI-MLC reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening organising efforts, collective bargaining, workers’ rights, social dialogue and international solidarity in addressing the challenges of the future world of work.

Together, we build stronger unions, stronger workers and a stronger future.
