union leaders in Malaysia to take positions and develop a national
strategy to campaign against the Free Trade Agenda and for Trade
Justice.
This
2-day Training Workshop was held at the Regal Park Hotel, in Wilayah
Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur. It was followed by a Press Conference at the Kuala Lumpur And Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on the morning of 22 April.
The
meeting had around 25 trade union participants from key sectors to be
affected by trade and investment issue. Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal,
Secretary General of Asean Services Employees Trade Union Council
(ASETUC) was invited to participate at this Workshop to share his experience with these issues and the role of ASETUC in raising regional issues of interest to labour.
The
focus of this workshop was on the linkages between Free Trade
Agreements (FTAs) and privatisation, low wages, contractualisation and
the digital economy. This is of special relevance for unions in the
education sector that are facing and challenging privatisation and
informalisation of working conditions.
