Seminar on World Day for Decent Work
The Decent Work Working Group (DWWG), a Malaysian labour law reform project initiated by labour activists held a Seminar on World Day for Decent Work on the 7th October 2018.
Following
the May 2018 change of Government in Malaysia, trade unions and labour
NGOs have been working together (under the name the "Decent Work Working
Group") to develop a collective package of proposed legal reforms that
would bring Malaysian labour law into compliance with the ILO core
standards and the decent work framework.
On
4 September 2018 these proposed reforms were shared with a larger group
of trade unions, labour NGOs and migrant worker communities in a series
of workshopped sessions to further develop the proposed law changes to
reflect specific, on-the-ground circumstances and issues.
On World Day for
Decent Work (7 October) the Decent Work Working Group held a broader
round of consultation meetings with more unions, migrant worker
organisations and relevant actors working to expand the protection of
labour rights. Amongst attended were Dr. P. Ramasamy, Deputy Chief
Minister II for Penang, Mr. Charles Santiago, Member of Parliament for
Klang and Y.Bhg Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President UNI MLC.
The
objective of this seminar is to present the analysis on restrictive
labour and industrial relations laws preventing full exercise of worker
and trade union rights based on ILO Core Conventions and Decent Work
Agenda. Additionally, the seminar will explore worker-related issues
such as social protection and employment promotion strategies.
