PRESS RELEASE
UNI Global Union joins its affiliate KSKSTMB (TV3 Union) and the UNI Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC) in condemning the attack and killing of colleague Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, cameraman of Bernama TV. Noramfaizul Mohd Nor was killed while on an aid mission in Mogadishu Somalia on 2 September 2011. His colleague and fellow cameraman Aji Saregar Mazlan from TV3 was wounded in the incident.
First
press reports said that soldiers of AMISON, the African Union’s peacekeeping
force opened fire on the vehicle of the two colleagues when they travelled back
to Mogadishu airport. Noramfaizul Mohd Nor and Aji Saregar Mazlan participated
in a aid mission to help famine victims and were accompanying the Malaysian aid
agency Putera 1 Malaysia Club. The team was due to travel back home on
Saturday. Noramfaizul Mohd Nor leaves behind a wife and two sons.
“This
tragic incident involving our Media personnel has touched the heart of the
International Media Community and all Malaysians, especially the Media Fraternity,
who have lost a courageous, passionate and dedicated colleague” said Mohamed
Shafie BP Mammal, President of the UNI Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC).
“UNI
Global Union reiterates UNI MLC’s condemnation of this attack and calls for
improved security measures to be implemented for media workers in Somalia” UNI
Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings, said. Somalia ranks as the
deadliest country in Africa for media workers with more than 20 workers killed
since 2007.
