Trade Union Training Workshop on Trade Justice
The
Public Services International (PSI), Building and Woodworkers
International (BWI) and Monitoring Sustainability of Globalisation (MNS)
organised a Training Workshop on Trade Justice from 20-22 April 2019 in
Kuala Lumpur. The aim of this Training is to increase the capacity of
union leaders in Malaysia to take positions and develop a national
strategy to campaign against the Free Trade Agenda and for Trade
Justice.
This
2-day Training Workshop was held at the Regal Park Hotel, in Wilayah
Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur. It was followed by a Press Conference at the Kuala Lumpur And Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on the morning of 22 April.
The
meeting had around 25 trade union participants from key sectors to be
affected by trade and investment issue. Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal,
Secretary General of Asean Services Employees Trade Union Council
(ASETUC) was invited to participate at this Workshop to share his experience with these issues and the role of ASETUC in raising regional issues of interest to labour.
The
focus of this workshop was on the linkages between Free Trade
Agreements (FTAs) and privatisation, low wages, contractualisation and
the digital economy. This is of special relevance for unions in the
education sector that are facing and challenging privatisation and
informalisation of working conditions.

UNI MLC - ICT Japan Community Service Program with Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ar-Rahmaniah, Rasa, Hulu Selangor
On
14th April 2019, UNI MLC in cooperation with ICT-Japan organised a
community service program with the children of Pertubuhan Kebajikan
Ar-Rahmaniah at Rasa, Hulu Selangor. This program was also held in
conjunction with the upcoming May Day Celebration 2019.
This program is the brainchild of Bro. Minao Noda, the President of ICT
Japan.
A total of 130 people participated in this program consisting of officials from ICT Japan, Bro Minao Noda, Sis Fumiko Kimura, Sis. Alice Chang, Director of UNI Apro Commerce, Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President UNI MLC, Puan Fauziah binti Noordin, Chairperson of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ar-Rahmaniah, Puan Asmah binti Norddin, Chief of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ar-Rahmaniah, trade union leaders from various UNI MLC affiliated unions and the children and staff of Ar-Rahmaniah.

program started with a welcome address by Puan Fauziah binti Noordin,
Chairperson of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ar-Rahmaniah followed by a speech
from Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President UNI MLC and later a
speech from Bro Minao Noda, President of ICT Japan. The children of
Ar-Rahmaniah were then presented with a goody bag by Bro. Noda and Bro
Noda also presented the children with a stuffed toy which was brought
all the way from Japan by ICT Japan. In appreciation of Bro. Noda and
ICT Japan's contribution to Ar-Rahmaniah, Puan Fauziah, Chairperson of
Ar-Rahmaniah and Datuk Mohamed Shafie, President of UNI MLC presented
Bro. Noda with a token of appreciation.
ICT
Japan contributed to facilitate improvements in the infrastructure of
the Children's home and the contribution also helped to refurbish stock
of essential needs of the children. Some of the items supplied were
double-decker bedsteads, bedsheets and pillow cases, cupboards and
shelves for the dormitory, cutlery, cups and plates. Among other grocery
items were quality sardines, rice, sugar, cooking oil, milo packets,
condensed milk and maggi mee. The children of Ar-Rahmaniah were also
supplied with sports equipment such as badminton rackets and
shuttlecocks, carrom boards, football and some local sports items.
Contributions were also made by UNI MLC affiliated Unions.
On
behalf of UNI MLC and the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Ar-Rahmaniah, Datuk
Shafie expresses his sincere thanks and appreciation to Bro. Noda, ICT
Japan and all UNI MLC affiliated Unions for their invaluable
contribution to the Children of Ar-Rahmaniah and making this community
service program a success.
