UNI Apro & ICTJ Workshop

The
UNI Apro & ICTJ Youth Workshop was held from the 3rd to the 6th
of October 2016 in Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
This
workshop, a collaboration between UNI Apro and The Federation of Information
and Communication Technology Service Workers of Japan (ICTJ) is to give an
opportunity for young participants to learn from each other, build a network of
international solidarity, learning the developments of youth work in the trade
unions, learning the sources of rights for youth and at the same time giving
youth the chance to develop strategies to protect their rights both at the
national and international level.
The slogan used for this workshop is “UNI
Apro YOUth Scaling New Heights”.
The objective of the workshop is for participants to build up their
self-confidence as leaders of trade unions, promote international solidarity
and continue to network amongst like-minded people and organizations.
Participants are also expected to spread the good work done with their social
medias.
- Day 1
More than 60 participants from various
countries namely Japan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Philippines,
Vietnam, Malaysia (8 countries) participated in this workshop. The participants
were put into their respective groups which were prepared beforehand by the
organizers. Participants then introduced themselves and got to know everyone in
their group. Satoshi Tamai, UNI Apro Director for Organizing gave an
introduction on UNI and UNI Apro. Alice Chang, UNI Apro Director for Commerce
and Youth then briefed the participants on communication skills. The opening
for this workshop was held at 1pm, where Bro Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal and the
UNI MLC Executive Committee attended as honoured guests. Bro Kenji Shibata, the
General Secretary of ICTJ gave a short speech followed by Bro Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal,
the President of UNI MLC. Bro Christopher Ng, the UNI Apro Regional Secretary
then talked about Scaling New Heights in UNI Apro; The Organizing Agenda. Sis
Alice then gave a brief talk on using IT for communication such as photo and
video taking. Resource persons for each team then briefed their teams for their
activity which will be held on day
- Day 2
Day
2 started off with a team building exercise which is known as “Eggs can fly”.
The teams were required to use 2 pieces of A4 paper and masking take to prevent
a raw egg from breaking. 2 teams were able to save their eggs from breaking.
Reports were then given from each group from previous day activities. Bro Kenji
Shibata, the General Secretary of the Federation of Information and
Communication Technology Service Workers of Japan (ICTJ) then gave a talk on
Youth Leaders in the Trade Union. The workshop then continued with
representatives from ICTJ, UNI MLC, Philippines, ASPEK Indonesia giving a short
report regarding the trade union movement and their respective countries. The

Josue Grajo, one of the participants in the UNI Apro Youth Workshop which was
held on 22nd to 25th of August 2013 in Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur, prepared a
video on “ Better techniques on Selfie Photography”. Despite his
inability to attend this workshop, he prepared and sent his video all the way
from the Philippines just to help our participants.
Brother
Rainer, Director for Youth in UNI PLC gave a presentation on “How to Compose a
Video Using Moviemaker”. The main objective of this presentation was to help
the participants prepare a video of their assignments given on day 3.
- Day 3
All the teams went out to carry out their
interviews and assignment tasks. The resource persons had an outing to Batu
Caves as part of their team building activity. All teams reported back to the
hotel by 6.00pm and continued to prepare for the presentation that was to take
place the following day.
- Day 4
All the groups presented their findings
from the assignment tasks the previous day. Sis Alice then gave a talk on
“Fundamental Rights at Work”. The workshop ended with the Ganbatte Night where
participants from each country gathered together and performed.
