“Dialogue Forum on ASEAN Economic Integration 2015 and Migrant Labour in Malaysia and ASEAN”

The Asean Services Employees Trade Union Council (ASETUC) Malaysia National Working Group organized the Malaysia National Tripartite Social Dialogue Forum on "ASEAN Economic Integration 2015 and Migrant Labour in Malaysia and ASEAN”  on 23 December 2014 at Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The forum was attended by almost 50 ASETUC Affiliates and partners from BWI, PSI, and UNI in Malaysia.

Also present was Dr. Kun Wardana, Director of ASETUC Operations and Bro. Mohamed Shafie, General Secretary of ASETUC.

The objective of this Forum was To discuss the impacts of ASEAN Economic Integration by 2015 on the labour market, in particular on migrant workers in the ASEAN and Malaysia and To define concrete and continued cooperation and engagement among social partners in Malaysia and ASEAN to tackle negative impacts of the ASEAN Economic Integration.

The Interactive Panel Discussion 1 : ASEAN Economic Integration 2015 and its impacts on labour market and migration comprised of 2 Presenters : Mr Ravindran Palanippan, Senior Director of ASEAN Division, Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Mr. Charles Santiago, Member of Parliament for Klang/Member of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) while the 2 Respondents were : Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan, Executive Director of MEF and Mr. A Navamukundan, National Executive Secretary, National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW).

The Interactive Panel Discussion 2: Current situation of Labour Migration in Malaysia and ASEAN was presented by Ms. Sumitha Shaanthinni Kishna, Assistant Director, Bar Council Migrants Refugees & Immigration Affairs Committee and the discussion was responded by Mr. A Navamukundan and Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan.

A joint meeting between UNI APRO, UNI MLC & AEON Union was held on 17 December 2014 at the UNI MLC Head Office in Kuala Lumpur.

Present at this meeting was Bro. Christopher Ng, Regional Secretary of UNI APRO, Bro. Satoshi Tamai, Director of UNI APRO Organizing, Bro. Kenji Niizuma, Bro. Tetsuro Murakami and Sis. Mana Okada from AEON Group Workers Union and Bro. Mohamed Shafie, President of UNI MLC.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and plan the organizing of AEON companies in Malaysia mainly Aeon Big (M) Sdn. Bhd.

DiGi-Malaysia Signs 1st Collective Agreement with Union!!!

DiGi-Malaysia Signs 1st Collective Agreement

 

 

 

 

 

 

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“DiGi”) signed their first collective agreement with newly-formed in-house union, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd Employees Union (“DGEU”) on 15 December 2014 at 3.00 pm.  The agreement takes effect from 1 January 2015, and will remain in force for three years.

The collective agreement recognises DGEU as the sole bargaining body for all eligible employees, covering all permanent employees of DiGi apart from those with executive, managerial, confidential, and security functions. The agreement also provides the regulation of relations between DiGi and DGEU, and covers a wide range of employment terms and conditions for eligible employees.

The signing was witnessed by Fong Khei Por, Director-General for Industrial Relations, Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysia. DiGi was represented by Chief Executive Officer Lars Norling, while DGEU was represented by its President, Ismail bin Jonid.

Speaking at the event, Norling commended the both parties for being able to bring the process to a positive closure, within a relatively short time. “DiGi is committed to creating an engaging and supportive work culture and environment, built on progressive employment practices, and through strong partnerships with our employees and their representative bodies. Together with our parent Telenor Group we respect and support the right to organise and the right to collective bargaining, within national laws and regulations. We welcome the establishment of this Employees Union, and look forward to our good collaboration in the coming years, based on a clear and predictable framework.”

Fong expressed that the Department of Industrial Relations was encouraged by the employee involvement ambitions of DiGi, and the close cooperation between DiGi and DGEU. “I view positively this new accord between DiGi and DGEU, and strongly believe that this milestone will not only further preserve the industrial harmony at DiGi, but also accelerate the pursuit of the company’s business goals and strengthen employee welfare."

Also in attendance at the event was Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President of Union Networks International - Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC), which supported the process of negotiation and formation of DGEU. “The value of a collective agreement cannot be measured in terms of tangible benefits alone, but more importantly the extent to which it drives both the organisation’s productivity and employees’ growth and development. To this end, UNI-MLC recognizes and applauds the good cooperation between DiGi and DGEU, and congratulates both parties on this achievement.”

More than 2,000 trade unionists, representing some of the most powerful unions in the world, arrived in Cape Town for  the official opening of the UNI Global Union 4th World Congress on Sunday, 7 December 2014.

The Congress was the largest global gathering of trade unions ever to take place in Africa and was held in South Africa to mark the 20th anniversary of the end of apartheid. UNI is the global union for the services sector and is made up of 900 unions with 20 million members.

The opening ceremony, which began at 15:30 on Sunday 7th December, included speeches by: Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Economic Development, South Africa Ahmed Kathrada, political leader, Rivonia trialist, Robben Island prisoner and human rights activist Bones Skulu, President of UNI Africa andGeneral Secretary of SACCAWU

The congress took place for over three days from Monday to Wednesday, 8-10 December.

The theme of the Congress was “Including You” which aimed to challenge economic exclusion, and income inequality, with the call to action, “The World Needs a Pay Rise”.

UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings, said, “We are delighted to bring our World Congress to Cape Town at a time when the whole world is once again  remembering the legacy of Nelson Mandela, on the first anniversary of his passing.  Mandela’s selfless leadership and his commitment to the labour movement cannot be underestimated at a time when the world is struggling against record levels of economic injustice.”
