TRADE UNIONS PROPOSE FRAMEWORK TO PROTECT WORKERS’ RIGHTS IN TPPA
ASETUC General-Secretary Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal
The ASEAN Services Employees Trade
Union Council (ASETUC) expresses concern over the possible threat of cross
border movement of migrant workers if the government signs the Trans-Pacific
Partnership Agreement (TPPA). The council says this could result in
cross-border membership, affecting unions and employers. It proposes setting up
a framework to curb cross-border membership and includes a clear definition on
the role of unions in protecting workers’ welfare. ASETUC will submit the
proposed framework by March next year.
