Forum on “Strengthening Solidarity Support to Adopt the ILO Article 33 Resolution”
On 27th May 2025, A Joint Public Forum on “Strengthening Solidarity Support to Adopt the ILO Article 33 Resolution” was held at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The forum was jointly organised by the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), SUHAKAM, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), and the University of Malaya Student Union (UMSU). The main objective was to strengthen regional and international solidarity support of action on the forced labour and human rights violation in Myanmar.
The event inaugurated with powerful opening remarks from special guest speakers, who shared their views on the Myanmar crisis and urged for urgent and coordinated action against the ongoing violations of trade union and human rights in the country.
Keynote speakers included Dato’ Seri Mohd Hishamudin Md Yunus, Chairman of SUHAKAM, and Mr. Thomas Andrews, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar. Shoya Yoshida, General Secretary of ITUC-AP, explained the significance of the ILO Supervisory Mechanism and its role in addressing Myanmar’s non-compliance under Article 33.
Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President of UNI-MLC, Vice-President of UNI APRO & General Secretary of ASETUC delivered his speech in the forum and sincerely thanked the SUHAKAM,BWI and all participants for their efforts and he expressed deep sorrow for the people of Myanmar, especially trade union members. He explained the importance of global solidarity and active intervention from the ILO and international organisations to assist restore democracy, human rights, and freedom of association in Myanmar. The forum concluded with a strong message of unity and continued commitment to solidarity support for Myanmar’s workers and civil society in their fight for justice and freedom
