Media Unions of Sri Lanka Join UNI-MLC Leadership for Successful Solidarity Meeting in Malaysia
A solidarity meeting between representatives of Media Unions from Sri Lanka and the leadership of UNI-MLC was successfully held on 21 November 2025 at the UNI-MLC Office, Malaysia.
During this meeting, a bilateral discussion was conducted focusing on a range of matters and challenges related to the trade union movement and organising activities including workers advantages and disadvantages in both Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The discussion emphasised strengthening solidarity, enhancing freedom of association, and improving national policies to uphold workers’ rights and promote the overall welfare of workers across multiple sectors.
Lasantha De Silva, President of Media Protect -Sri Lanka, highlighted Malaysia’s national policy as one of the most effective frameworks for ensuring workers’ well-being and protecting their rights. He stressed the importance of freedom of speech, while also emphasising that social responsibility and a clear framework remains crucial in the media sector of Sri Lanka.
On behalf of UNI-MLC, Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President of UNI-MLC, expressed his sincere appreciation to all participants, including the guest representative, for dedicating their valuable time and making this meeting meaningful and productive. He highlighted the significance of the philosophy of Smart Partnership in building harmonious industrial relations and safeguarding workers’ rights, protection, and justice, especially within the media sector, where journalists play a vital role in upholding national interest.
