“Dialogue Forum on ASEAN Economic Integration 2015 and Migrant Labour in Malaysia and ASEAN”


The Asean Services Employees Trade Union Council (ASETUC) Malaysia National Working Group organized the Malaysia National Tripartite Social Dialogue Forum on "ASEAN Economic Integration 2015 and Migrant Labour in Malaysia and ASEAN”  on 23 December 2014 at Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The forum was attended by almost 50 ASETUC Affiliates and partners from BWI, PSI, and UNI in Malaysia.

Also present was Dr. Kun Wardana, Director of ASETUC Operations and Bro. Mohamed Shafie, General Secretary of ASETUC.
The objective of this Forum was To discuss the impacts of ASEAN Economic Integration by 2015 on the labour market, in particular on migrant workers in the ASEAN and Malaysia and To define concrete and continued cooperation and engagement among social partners in Malaysia and ASEAN to tackle negative impacts of the ASEAN Economic Integration.

The Interactive Panel Discussion 1 : ASEAN Economic Integration 2015 and its impacts on labour market and migration comprised of 2 Presenters : Mr Ravindran Palanippan, Senior Director of ASEAN Division, Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Mr. Charles Santiago, Member of Parliament for Klang/Member of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) while the 2 Respondents were : Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan, Executive Director of MEF and Mr. A Navamukundan, National Executive Secretary, National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW).

The Interactive Panel Discussion 2: Current situation of Labour Migration in Malaysia and ASEAN was presented by Ms. Sumitha Shaanthinni KishnaAssistant Director, Bar Council Migrants Refugees & Immigration Affairs Committee and the discussion was responded by Mr. A Navamukundan and Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan.
